Banyana Banyana youngster relishing national team opportunity

Banyana Banyana teenage sensation Bonolo Mokoma says she's thankful to be part of the senior national team at the age of just 17.

Mokoma, who currently plays for JVW FC, is one of the leading goal scorers with 12 goals so far in this season's Hollywoodbets Super League.

The 17-year-old got her first senior international call-up in May this year, ahead of the Three Nations tournament, and says she's learning a lot from the senior players in the team.

"Being the youngest in the team is amazing because making my Banyana Banyana debut at the age of 17 is a huge opportunity for me – there are a lot of young girls who want to play for Banyana and I'm here at the age of 17,” Mokoma reflected.

“The spirit is very high and it creates a huge bond in the team, and also brings back my confidence because I'm not very confident, playing with them [senior players], but the spirit is very high and that helps my confidence."

Banyana played to a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in the first leg of their final 2026 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers last week, away in Kinshasa.

Mokoma says qualifying for the WAFCON, as well as the FIFA Women's World Cup, would mean a lot for her as a young player.

"I think it will be a big thing for us to qualify because I also want to play in the World Cup with Banyana and go to WAFCON and play my first WAFCON with them.

"So, I think it will be a great chance for us to qualify. The team is very confident because now we are back home and we're gonna have more supporters than DRC, I think it's all up to us," she concluded.
