Bafana wrap up 2022 with Angola stalemate

Bafana Bafana closed off 2022 with a stalemate against neighbours Angola at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts had to again come from behind to level matters later in the second half with striker Zakhele Lepasa converting a penalty to cancel out the earlier goal scored by attacker Christovao Paciencia.

Bafana coach Hugo Broos has mixed feelings.

"I'm not disappointed, even though I would have loved to win the game today. That's for sure. We expected the same performance as Thursday but it was not possible today, we didn't play well either," he said.

Broos says his players looked exhausted having not only used several in the 2-1 win over Mozambique three days earlier, but a number of them featured for their clubs in the one-day Carling Black Label Cup last weekend.

"I felt that there was a lack of determination and players were not fresh enough today. Maybe all those games in the last 14 days, so the many games of the last two weeks played a role today," he added.

"Even Thursday after the game, there were players complaining about fatigue. I think I can accept that because if you look back, they played the MTN8 Final, The Black Label Cup and then on Thursday the game, so yes you can expect them to be tired," Broos explained.

"I thought that by bringing in some fresh players in the team, it would make everything better but it didn't work,"

Bafana will return to action four months from now in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Liberia.

Broos is confident that his side has enough quality to make it to the tournament in Ivory Coast come January 2024.

"But again, I'm satisfied about the camp, we played two games, two times against an opponent. We will play again in March against Liberia, so it was a good test," he said.

"I'm sure what we showed in those two games and also in the games in September, I'm sure that we will qualify for AFCON because we can play good football and we can play modern football. Today the players may have been fatigued."
