Mofokeng, a player who played a pivotal role in Orlando Pirates title winning season - ending a 14 year drought, had been linked with several overseas moves over the past few years, but he had to wait for the perfect deal for himself, the club, and the family.
In an exclusive interview on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube on Metro FM last night, Mofokeng revealed how the deal came about...
"I knew about it three games before the league ended. As a young player and growing human being, you would want to go to a place where you can grow and develop. It's a great first step for me in Europe, and it's a club where I can move my career forward."
To complete the move, only the medical and finalization of personal terms were outstanding, and immediately after the FIFA 2026 World Cup participation with Bafana Bafana, Mofokeng flew straight from Los Angeles to Brussels to complete the deal with Union, which SABC Sport understands to be over R70-million.
Mofokeng says he’s entered this deal knowing very well the prospects of moving to a top-five league in the future.
Another area of focus since Mofokeng’s four-year deal with Union SG was announced has been working on his physique, which will enable him to be more competitive and effective in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League and UEFA Champions League. This is something he’s embracing...
"I don't think that's a problem because I played CAF, in the AFCON, and the World Cup too. Obviously I have to build a bit, but I don't think that's a problem because I can still play with those big people. I can't be built like Mbokazi but the club said they will help me with my physique."
Mofokeng has also reiterated the words from Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza that he could’ve left for overseas before the start of last season as there were many offers on the table, but the 21-year-old decided to delay his departure as he wanted to help his club lift the Betway Premiership title. A feat he managed to achieve with 19-goal contributions.
