Maseko’s Copenhagen move confirmed as Zuma plays key role

SABC Sport first reported that the winger was set to move to Denmark after Copenhagen reached an agreement with Mamelodi Sundowns, where Maseko had appeared to fall down the pecking order.

His representative, Glyn Binkin, confirmed the move while revealing that former South African international Sibusiso Zuma also played an influential role in helping put the transfer together.

"I would like to update everybody on the developments which have transpired over the past couple of days. Developments which everybody has been following with much interest and at this stage I'd like to share an important update regarding Thapelo. In the coming days Thapelo will travel to Denmark to finalise the next chapter of his football career by signing with FC Copenhagen,” Binkin said.

“A club I think is synonymous with South African football especially because of Sibusiso Zuma who also played an influential role in this opportunity for Thapelo."

Binkin expressed gratitude to the Sundowns hierarchy following what had played out publicly as a difficult discussion to allow Maseko to leave the club.

"It's an incredibly exciting opportunity for him to pursue his dreams of playing in Europe and to continue developing both as a footballer and as  a young man. On behalf of Thapelo and his family, I would like to express our sincere gratitude in particular to the president of Mamelodi Sundowns, Dr Patrice Motsepe, who had a fantastic relationship with the young man and who the young man looked up to with much admiration,” he added.

“The chairman, Mr Tlhopie Motsepe, the sporting director, Mr Flemming Berg and the club's management for the assistance and the standing in support in allowing Thapelo to follow his dreams."

Despite three challenging years for Maseko at Chloorkop, the agent said the player would not forget some of the best moments having joined from SuperSport United back in July 2023.
