Bafana Bafana won’t be pushovers warns Teboho Mokoena

Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena insists they are determined to show they belong on football's biggest stage when they kick off their Group A campaign against hosts Mexico.

Hugo Broos' men face El Tri at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Thursday, where a crowd of nearly 85 000 is expected to create a daunting atmosphere, with Czechia and South Korea to follow later.

Despite making their World Cup debuts, Mokoena believes this generation has an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, stressing that Bafana have not travelled to Mexico, the USA and Canada merely to make up the numbers.

"Of course the expectations are very high, it's going to be an amazing game with an amazing atmosphere. As a team we are looking forward to it, we are excited and we know how much it means to everyone back home."

The Mamelodi Sundowns talisman pointed out that every one of the 26 men in the squad vowed to bring a competitive edge to the World Cup.

"We must enjoy the experience and we shouldn't go back home with any regrets," said the Bafana midfield enforcer.

While Mexico have been in sizzling form during their friendly matches – going unbeaten in the previous five and winning three of them – Bafana have given Broos sleepless nights as they failed to beat Panama, Nicaragua and Jamaica.

Mokoena, however, says he is not concerned.
