Azerbaijan outfit trigger Aden McCarthy buyout clause

SABC Sport understands that Azerbaijani outfit Sabah FK have triggered the buyout clause in Aden McCarthy's contract at Kaizer Chiefs, taking the defender's reported move abroad a step closer.

The development effectively clears the path for the 22-year-old's transfer to Europe, subject to a successful medical, with personal terms between the player and Sabah understood to have already been agreed.

McCarthy's departure has been anticipated for several weeks but the activation of the release clause represents a major breakthrough in the deal – by triggering the clause, Sabah have effectively removed the need for lengthy negotiations and placed Chiefs in a position where they have little choice but to facilitate the transfer.

The defender enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the Amakhosi first team, making 31 appearances across all competitions, including 23 in the Betway Premiership.

While suspensions and minor injuries interrupted his progress at times, McCarthy established himself as a key member of the squad and was widely regarded as one of the club's brightest young prospects.

The son of former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fabian McCarthy, the young centre-back emerged from the club's development structures and recently earned a contract extension.

However, the existence of a buyout clause has now opened the door to a move abroad.

Neither club has officially confirmed the transfer, although McCarthy – who was spotted in Cape Town on vacation – is expected to travel in the coming days to complete his medical and finalise the remaining paperwork.

His departure is also set to ease Chiefs' defensive transition following the arrival of Thabo Moloisane, who joins Amakhosi from Stellenbosch FC after completing his own move to Naturena.
