Another Cape Town Spurs case referred to SAFA

Another Cape Town Spurs case referred to SAFA

SABC Sport has established that the Premier Soccer League has referred a second Cape Town Spurs complaint to SAFA for arbitration to avoid further delays in the relegation/promotion play-offs.

The first matter, which is well-documented and involves the alleged ineligibility of Durban City winger Sazi Magawana, is expected to have a final verdict by Monday evening following deliberations last week.

Spurs are arguing their Motsepe Foundation Championship counterparts cannot be the legitimate winners of the second tier to gain promotion to the Betway Premiership because Magawana’s clearance should have been issued by Leruma United and not Marumo Gallants.

United purchased the status of Gallants in July last year after the latter successfully bid to takeover Moroka Swallows.

In an effort to save their own franchise having been relegated from the second division last month, Spurs protested over two more players in Osborn Maluleke as well as Sibusiso Kumalo, who play for Kruger United and Pretoria Callies – respectively – on the same grounds.

The duo were both in Gallants’ books during the 2023/24 campaign and Spurs insists there is evidence the players should have been issued their clearances by United due to the nature of the transaction.

SABC Sport can confirm that the PSL has now immediately referred the matter to SAFA in the interest of time.

The play-offs, which will involve Cape Town City as the team that finished second from bottom in the Betway Premiership, as well as Orbit College FC and Casric Stars were supposed to have kicked off by now.

Only after the arbitration is finalised will the PSL confirm dates and the teams taking part in the matches before the start of the new season in August.
