Rassie Erasmus uses Barbarians clash to expand Springbok depth

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus believes Saturday’s match against the Barbarians presents an important opportunity to build squad depth ahead of the 2026 season.

With several players unavailable due to injuries and the Bulls’ involvement in the United Rugby Championship final, Erasmus has used the occasion to test several combinations. One of the more notable selections is utility back Quan Horn, who has been named at flyhalf. Erasmus says the coaching staff are keen to see how Horn adapts to the role as they continue to strengthen their options in a key position.

"We've been working with Quan now for three years at training sessions, and we just like the way he takes the ball to the line, he's an awesome defender and he has a great pass on him too."

The Springboks will also take a cautious approach with Manie Libbok, who arrives in camp after an extended season in Japan.

The flyhalf featured regularly for his club in Japan Rugby League One Division Two and finished the campaign as the competition’s leading points scorer with 165 points.

Erasmus says Libbok has accumulated significant game time over the last few months and the management team wants to ensure he remains fresh as the international season gathers momentum.

"Manie has played a lot of games that side and we must also see if Handre gets through this weekend's final without injury."

While Erasmus has selected a strong matchday squad featuring 18 capped internationals, the fixture also offers a platform for several players looking to make their mark at Test level.

Junior Springbok captain Riley Norton has been included in the second row, while prop Carlu Sadie continues his push for higher honours after impressing in France.

Among the uncapped replacements are hooker JJ Kotze, and loose forward Paul de Villiers.

Another player attracting attention is young playmaker Vusi Moyo, who has been named on the bench after a series of promising performances for the Junior Springboks.

Erasmus says the coaching staff have been encouraged by the youngster’s development and are eager to see how he handles the step up in intensity if given an opportunity against the Barbarians.
