Lions unfazed about returning to Leinster for URC knockout

With the sun setting on the league phase of the URC, the final standings came into sharp focus. The final out went down to the final whistle of Munster's clash with the Lions on Saturday, where the Irish giants emerged 24-17 victors.

But the real winners of the weekend were the men from Johannesburg, as they secured their first-ever quarterfinal berth and spot in Europe's premier club competition, the Champions Cup. Their immediate reward? A trip back to Dublin to face reigning URC champions and four-time Champions Cup winners Leinster.

The Lions faced Leinster just two weeks ago, going down 31-7.

"These two fixtures against Leinster and Munster were exactly what you need going into a quarterfinal," said van Rooyen after the Munster loss.

"You talk about quality opposition, tough conditions, and quality teams - that's exactly what Leinster and Munster are.

"There are enough positives to get excited about the opportunity ahead. Leinster might be European champions by then, and you're playing against them in Dublin. The energy and focus for that should look after itself.

"It's about whether we can rise to the occasion and find a way to play our game against them."

The Lions are still in Ireland after their two-match tour. When asked about logistics, van Rooyen indicated they could stay up north until the quarterfinal.

"Both options are still alive," he said.

"We just need to assess the injuries and then make a good, informed decision on whether we stay here and prepare or head home to recover before coming back."
