Lions target reset during URC break after bruising derby defeat

Lions captain Francke Horn says processing the heavy weekend loss to the Bulls has been challenging for the squad, but insists the group is determined to regroup and respond.

The Johannesburg-based side now enters a scheduled United Rugby Championship break, which gives players a chance to recover physically and mentally before the competition resumes.

After suffering a 52-17 defeat in the Jukskei derby, Horn says the focus when the team reconvenes will centre on addressing defensive lapses and improving overall consistency.

"We have a week off to really switch off, and when we come back we'll look at what went wrong and try to rectify it. We'll put all our eggs in one basket for the URC and fcocus on that. I have no doubt the guys will step out of this, and we'll move forward," said Horn

Horn conceded that the performance has sparked honest internal reflection, with players expected to take accountability for individual contributions within the team structure.

The defeat has seen the Lions slip outside the URC playoff bracket, dropping to 10th position on the standings.

However, the team will benefit from a favourable run of six home fixtures in the closing stages of the campaign, offering a crucial opportunity to rebuild momentum.

Head coach Ivan van Rooyen says the upcoming stretch of matches will be decisive in determining whether the franchise can secure a historic first appearance in the URC playoffs.

"Yeah, I think we've got 6 more games at home. The first two are against South African opposition – the Sharks and Stormers. It's not just the energy, but the execution of that energy that needs to be more consistent. March, April and May are going to be massive for us," said van Rooyen.

Van Rooyen emphasised the importance of maintaining composure and measured planning during the final block of fixtures.

He believes the upcoming break arrives at an ideal time, allowing the squad to recover from recent physical demands ahead of the final rounds of league action.
