Johannes embraces No.10 role ahead of Sharks duel

Bulls flyhalf Keagan Johannes says the thrilling second-half performance against Edinburgh has lifted the spirits within the Bulls camp ahead of a blockbuster South African derby against the Sharks.

The Bulls outscored the Scottish outfit 42–33 at Loftus Versfeld, where they return on Saturday evening for the semifinal. Johannes says everyone is locked in and focused on executing their roles.

"Everyone has a job to do in this upcoming semifinal, the mood is good within the camp, and we simply need to win these two games. I think if all the players do what they're supposed to do, then we should get the job done," said the electric flyhalf.

Johannes racked up 17 points, including a dazzling solo try last week.

While much of the talk has centred around his kicking game, the 25-year-old says his confidence is growing in the attacking phase too.

He’s embraced the flyhalf role and is eager to play his part in Saturday’s high-stakes clash.

A former schoolboy flyhalf, Johannes has had a breakout season after shifting from scrumhalf to cover the No. 10 jersey.

Injuries to Johan Goosen and the form struggles of Boeta Chamberlain opened the door, and Johannes has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

"I was juggling between scrumhalf and flyhalf at school level, so I really didn't make up my mind on which position I was going to focus on, until coach Jake asked me if I'm comfortable moving to the nr.10 slot."

Originally named as cover on the bench for both scrumhalf and flyhalf in the Bulls’ 6–2 forward-heavy split, Johannes has stepped up in Goosen’s absence and made the No. 10 jumper his own.

He admits the pressure is real, but so is the growth.

"Everyone looks to a flyhalf during difficult times, but I have to say that I'm enjoying the pressure, and thriving in the position," said Johannes.

Kick-off for the URC semifinal between the Bulls and the Sharks is set for 18:15 on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld.
