Vukile Zulu heartbroken after a travel setback forces him to miss 2026 Jamaican Netball League

South Africa men’s netball goal defence Vukile Zulu has been left disappointed after missing out on the opportunity to return to the Jamaican Netball League for the 2026 season.

Zulu featured in the league for the first time last year with the Knights and enjoyed an outstanding campaign, finishing the season with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade - earning him another invitation to compete in the 2026 edition.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Zulu explained that unforeseen travel complications prevented him from making the trip to Jamaica after his sponsorship arrangements collapsed at the last minute.

“Missing such a prestigious tournament is heartbreaking, to be honest, as I had been preparing very hard for my second visit to Jamaica. What happened is that the sponsorship plans I had in place fell through at the last minute.

“After my sponsorship plans fell through, I updated the organisers and they tried to arrange a Plan B that would have gotten me to Jamaica a day before the tournament. Unfortunately, that plan was also unsuccessful as the flight that had been identified was impacted by a snowstorm in the United States. That would have affected the Cape Town to New Jersey flight and the connecting flight from New Jersey to Jamaica,” said Zulu.

Despite the setback, the 23-year-old reflected fondly on the experience he gained during his first stint in the Jamaican league last season.

“Playing netball in Jamaica was a huge experience for me, especially in their top men’s competition, which is physically demanding, very intense and fast-paced. I tried to learn as much as possible so that I could share that knowledge with my teammates back home,” added Zulu.

Zulu has now shifted his focus to domestic competition, with the upcoming KwaZulu-Natal Netball Super League firmly in his sights. He will be aiming to help the Ocean Predators defend their title when the league gets underway.

“Since I missed out on this huge opportunity in Jamaica, my focus is now on the upcoming KZN Netball Super League, which starts in May. The goal is to maintain my fitness and stay injury-free as the year is still early,” he expressed.
