Netball South Africa enters its 2025 Special General Meeting under a cloud of uncertainty and controversy surrounding suspended president Cecilia Molokwane.
World Netball has instructed Molokwane to remain barred from all netball activities while it investigates allegations of professional misconduct and mismanagement of NSA funds.
Despite that directive, she has confirmed her intention to attend the SGM this morning and throughout the weekend, defying the world governing body’s suspension order.
The two-day meeting, which will include NSA’s executive elections, is set for 25 and 26 October at the OR Tambo Garden Court in Johannesburg, beginning with council sessions at 10am.
SASCOC leadership, led by president Barry Hendricks, has been invited as observers as part of efforts to ensure transparency in the process.
Molokwane, who has led the federation since 2017, was suspended on 10 April, but seven months later, no formal hearing or legal charges have been brought against her, while her suspension remains in effect.
NSA has reiterated that it does not support Molokwane’s bid to be part of the SGM and says it will continue to operate in line with World Netball’s governance directives.
“Netball South Africa’s Council is the highest decision-making body of the organisation, therefore they have the power to decide on whether to allow her to be part of the meeting or not,” said NSA acting president Mami Diale.
“Collectively we need to be mindful of the implications of allowing her to partake in these meetings. We continue to follow the lead from World Netball.”
The build-up to the SGM took a dramatic turn last week when Molokwane publicly announced her return to office at a press briefing in Polokwane.
She later confirmed to SABC Sport that she plans to attend the meeting despite her suspension.
“Districts have called for the SGM, if it is done procedurally, then it has to go on as per the NSA constitution. The council has to decide what they do, I cannot decide for them - I will just be leading the SGM,” she said.
“If the council asks that I should be excused from the AGM, I am happy to do so, then they can choose the presiding chair to lead the meeting pertaining to the NSA presidency issue.”
