Unbeaten Stellies still in the driving seat in the second spot race

Unbeaten Stellies still in the driving seat in the second spot race

Stellenbosch have extended their unbeaten run to 23 matches but missed a big opportunity to widen the gap between themselves and the rest of the chasing pack, as the race for the second CAF Champions League spot intensifies.

This follows Sekhukhune United’s late equaliser, during the one-all draw played at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane last night.

With Orlando Pirates, Sekhukhune United, and SuperSport United breathing heavily down their neck, Stellies head coach Steve Barker was happy with the point gained in this game.

''It is obviously a bit tough when you concede as late as that. I think it was a game of two-halfs, I thought in the first half we played well and in the second half they played with a lot of energy,'' said Barker.

Stellies are three points ahead of the third-placed Pirates, Sekhukhune are four points behind with SuperSport United a further five points below Stellies.

Barker says this is the most important week for his club, and still hopes that they can return with maximum points on Sunday against TS Galaxy.

''Obviously with a big game coming on Sunday we are going to Mbombela, these two games were going to be a bit challenging for us. We need to rejuvenate before we go to Galaxy,'' added Barker.

This was the third consecutive draw for Sekhukhune United and they also remain unbeaten in 2024 in the league.

Babina Noko’s late equalizer, four minutes from full-time came from Nigerian attacker Chibuike Ohizu as he cancelled out Anicet Oura’s early goal for the visitors. Head coach Lehlohonolo Seema says they were lucky not to have been punished by Stellies in this game.

''What a game, anytime we will take a point from Stellenbosch - it is not an easy team,'' said Seema.

Sekhukhune is one team that has benefited from the experience of playing in the CAF Inter-Club competitions this season, as this has helped them to develop character and ways of getting their players to perform.

Seema says a strong halftime talk last night helped to bring his boys back to the game.
