Amakhosi officially launched their women’s team in April after acquiring the status of Kwa-Thema outfit Springs Home Sweepers.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Mabena says the players are excited to become the first generation of female footballers to wear the famous black and gold jersey.
“I think it is going to be an exciting game, not just for us as the technical team, but also for the players. I am looking forward to seeing how the hard work from pre-season will come out and how they apply themselves against a big side such as Sundowns Ladies.
“I’m happy for the players and proud that they will wear the jersey for the first time in their season opener. We are looking forward to the match,” said Mabena.
The 46-year-old mentor believes she is ready for the challenge of what is expected to be a highly competitive league season, adding that the squad has a good balance of youth and experience.
“We have a very talented group, with a mix of young and experienced players. We are looking forward to seeing how they gel in the first match. We believe in the squad we have assembled and know they will be competitive in the league,” added Mabena.
Mabena has also urged football supporters to come out in their numbers for what promises to be a high intensity Gauteng derby.
“Please come out in numbers, this is going to be a very big game. It will be a high-intensity fixture in Ekurhuleni. I urge supporters to come and experience what women’s football is about,” she expressed.
