UJ coach full of praises for outgoing Shannon Macomo

University of Johannesburg Ladies coach Nthabeleng ‘Dunga’ Modiko says outgoing defender Shannon Macomo is one of the most brilliant players she has ever worked with.

UJ announced on their social media pages on Friday that Macomo is leaving the club, having joined the Orange Army in 2022.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Modiko says Macomo is disciplined on and off the field and she is thankful to have worked with her.

“Goes without saying, it's bittersweet as Shannon has been one of our stellar players, grew up and matured right in front of us. Very impressed by her journey, in fact, she is an epitome of what a UJ student athlete is. Excellent in the lecture halls and quality on the football pitch,” she said.

“Always hardworking, and of late, a leader who also shared so much knowledge and guidance with the new and Junior players to her. It's remarkable. I'm very proud of her. I want to send her well wishes on her journey and she's a legend in our eyes forever.”

Macomo progressed through South Africa’s U17 and U20 ranks before making her senior debut for Banyana Banyana in the COSAFA Cup in 2024.

Modiko says she has no doubt that she will do well in the next club that she will be playing for.

“I would simply remind her to embrace the good and bad with grace, and to continue working hard in the sport she loves. Wish her well. UJ will always be her home.”
