UJ Ladies coach happy after a thrilling win against TUT

UJ Ladies coach Nthabeleng ‘Dunga’ Modiko insists they had to fight really hard to secure three points in their 4-2 win against TUT in the Hollywoodbets Super League Amplified in Soweto on Sunday.

UJ were already leading 3-1 at half-time before Nombuso Malesa scored early in the second for TUT, and Kutlwano Maphane sealed the win for the Orange Army closer to the 90th minute.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Modiko says she is happy that they were able to get the three points.

"It was a tough match. Both teams really deserved to win because they both played in patches. I think one team took advantage of the other. I will speak of UJ; I thought in the first half we were solid at the start, and then we conceded, and then we dipped a little bit, and then our concentration was gone. We then had to come back in the last part of the first half, so that was really good, and again in the second half, a good reaction as well," said Modiko.

Dunga adds that she felt her players were a bit complacent at the beginning of the second half but is happy they have a strong mentality to get back into the game.

UJ won the 2026 Varsity Football Women's championship title in August, they however, had two losses in a row in the league coming into this match.

The former Banyana captain argues that she does not believe that her players were distracted by the cup competition.

The Orange Army will travel to face City Lads next weekend in Bloemfontein. The coach is focusing on resting her players before this crucial fixture.
