Appollis moved to Pirates last month after spending the past two seasons at Rise and Shine, where he became a star player following his arrival from Pretoria Callies.
Nkwe will be part of the defence entrusted to police the Bafana Bafana international, and he knows they are in for a tough battle.
"For me, personally, I'm very happy for him [getting to join Pirates], and looking at the game, I'd say it's going to be very interesting," said Nkwe.
"I mean, I was playing as a left-back and he was playing as our left-winger, so coming up against him is going to be a very good [battle], but it's going to be a test for me also because I just got back [from injury], but I think I'll be fine and I'll manage."
For the better part of last season the Phuti Mohafe-coached unit were punching above their weight, and Nkwe says the Wafa-Wafa competition presents them with a chance to pull off a huge upset eSgodini.
"As much as we can say we are not really under pressure, I'd say we are because we want to win. We don't want to just add numbers," he added.
"But I think we'll be ready for the game on the weekend. We expect them to come at us, that's for sure, but I think we have the right personnel.
"We've also made a few signings, not really big names, but we are all a bunch of good footballers and I think if we can just raise our hands, I think we'll be fine."
