Nkosinathi Sibisi fulfilling childhood dream with Orlando Pirates armband

Orlando Pirates’ newly-appointed captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has expressed his immense pride and gratitude after being handed the armband on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old defender officially takes over the leadership role from Innocent Maela, having worn it several times in recent seasons whenever Maela was unavailable.

Speaking to SABC Sport, “Bhodlela” admitted that captaining a club of Pirates’ stature is a dream he never thought would materialise.

"Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would captain such a big institution, such a great club – I grew up supporting the club, and for me to be given such a responsibility is a privilege and honour," said Sibisi.

"I never thought the day would come where I would be captain for the club, but I\m really honoured and grateful to the club for giving me such an opportunity."

An influential figure in the Pirates dressing room, Sibisi arose from the bench and stepped in when Olisah Ndah and Thabiso Sesane got injured last season, and says healthy competition has been a hallmark of this team’s success.

"It's always nice when there's competition within the group. As you've said, last season I didn't start the season very well, I was on the sidelines with the guys, but you don't have to be inside [the pitch] to contribute," he noted.

"For me, that's how I view my role in the team – I'm not always the man in the front, I don't talk a lot, but I believe I lead through my actions and, as you said, I managed to finish the season strong and hopefully it's going to continue this season."
