Thinasonke Mbuli admits to digging deep in Cape Town derby win

UWC coach Thinasonke Mbuli admits that they had to dig deep to secure maximum points in their Cape Town derby clash against the University of Cape Town in the Hollywoodbets Super League.

UWC claimed a narrow 1-0 win in the dying minutes of the game last night against the fellow students, to help register their 6th league win in 20 outings.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mbuli says the match was tough, but she’s happy that their game plan succeeded.

"We had a feeling it was going to be very tough to play against UCT, on their rather small astro turf pitch.

"The conditions were tough, the opponents were tough, so I'm very happy with this win."

Despite UWC’s fight to escape the drop zone, the team finds itself with more games in hand. Mbuli shares the importance of making use of the advantage.

"If we can just convert the chances we create, we will start to win more and find ourselves in a better position, because it is very difficult to score against us."

After losing a few key players coming into the 2025 season, Mbuli has been focused on the team’s rebuilding phase.

The next opponent for UWC is Durban ladies on Sunday.
