Matuludi overcomes injury setbacks to seize Bafana Bafana opportunity

Newly called-up Bafana Bafana wingback Thabang Matuludi is drawing inspiration from his former Polokwane City teammate Oswin Appollis’ rise at the international level.

Speaking to the media this week, during Bafana’s press conference, Matuludi, who was part of this year’s COSAFA Cup squad in Bloemfontein, says having someone like Appollis, attracting the attention of the national selectors, helped them.

"I think Oswin was a great motivation for us during his time at Polokwane City. Obviously, seeing your teammate play for the national team is inspiring."

Matuludi is expected to compete with Khuliso Mudau for the next two crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Zimbabwe and Rwanda this week, as they look to seal their spot for next year’s big spectacle.

However, last season, an injury delayed Matuludi’s progress, but he believes in perfect timing.

One of the outstanding right-backs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), says even though the injury delayed him, this call-up is a huge boost to his football career.

"I'm really happy to have been afforded this opportunity after putting in the hard work after my injury."

Another player, who is relishing this opportunity to be part of coach Hugo Broos’ squad, is Mamelodi Sundowns defender Maibongwe Khoza.

After having been part of the CHAN tournament, he’s also happy to be getting his big break and benefiting from head coach Hugo Broos’ belief in young talent.
