Stellenbosch clinched a 1-0 victory against Orlando Pirates in an intense DStv Premiership encounter at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday as the new season got underway.

The game started with Orlando Pirates winning an early corner in the 4th minute, which Stellies' goalkeeper Sage Stephens impressively punched away, thwarting the Buccaneers' initial opportunity.

Stellies displayed attacking flair through Iqraam Rayners on the right flank, but Orlando Pirates' defence held strong. In the 23rd minute, Antonio van Wyk's curling delivery into the box prompted a crucial save from Orlando Pirates' goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

Both teams generated chances. Fortune Makaringe's precise through ball sought Patrick Maswanganyi but was denied by Stephens. Thabiso Monyane of Orlando Pirates attempted a daring shot in the 33rd minute, but Stephens blocked effectively.

The first half concluded with Stellies earning a free-kick, cleared by Orlando Pirates' Nkosinathi Sibisi. Moments later, Phillip Ndlondlo and Zakhele Lepasa combined, yet Stephens thwarted Lepasa's shot.

Breaking the deadlock, Antonio van Wyk struck for Stellenbosch in the 42nd minute, sparking celebration among Stellies' supporters and altering the game's dynamics.

The second half saw Stellenbosch pursuing a second goal through swift counter-attacks. Jayden Adams' long-range attempt missed, and Orlando Pirates' Saleng and Lepasa combined, with the latter missing a key header chance.

Orlando Pirates' partnership of Hotto and Makaringe posed threats, but Stellies' defence blocked Makaringe's 57th-minute shot. Tensions rose as both sides sought to alter the scoreline. In the 71st minute, Orlando Pirates' Otladisa attempted a curling shot from outside the box, missing the target.

In the match's closing minutes, Sipho Chaine comfortably saved Kgaogelo Sekgota's header. Despite Stellies' relentless efforts, the score remained 1-0, sealing their hard-earned victory.

Stellies' steadfast defence and Antonio van Wyk's decisive goal proved the difference, securing their triumph over Orlando Pirates.
