Themba Zwane’s World Cup call-up set to pave way for Downs contract

SABC Sport has been led to believe that Themba Zwane's inclusion in Bafana Bafana's FIFA World Cup squad could strengthen his case for a new contract at Mamelodi Sundowns.

The veteran midfielder is expected to be among the experienced heads entrusted with guiding a new generation of South African players onto football's biggest stage, in what could be one of the defining moments of an already illustrious career.

Zwane's future at Sundowns has been the subject of speculation in recent months, particularly after injury setbacks limited his appearances and raised questions about whether the club would look beyond one of its most decorated servants.

The 36-year-old himself was unsure about his future on Monday – following Downs’ arrival from winning the CAF Champions League in Morocco – when asked whether he would still be at Chloorkop beyond June 30.

However, his continued relevance at the international level underlines the value he still brings both on and off the field.

With South Africa preparing for a first FIFA World Cup appearance since hosting in 2010, Zwane is expected to play a key leadership role within the squad and is viewed as an asset that cannot be easily replaced.

The midfielder has already secured his place among the greatest players in Sundowns history, having won multiple league titles, domestic trophies and two CAF Champions League crowns during a glittering spell in Tshwane.

His involvement at the World Cup under coach Hugo Broos is now viewed by some as further evidence that he still has plenty to offer at the highest level, despite approaching the latter stages of his career.
