Shabba’s goal still opening doors 16 years on

Former Bafana Bafana winger Siphiwe Tshabalala has reflected on his recent trip to Mexico as a FIFA legend – an initiative aimed at building excitement ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the Americas later this year.

Now 41, the former Kaizer Chiefs star continues to reap the rewards of scoring the opening goal when South Africa hosted the global showpiece 16 years ago.

Speaking to SABC Sport during the trophy tour, where he featured as both a FIFA and Coca-Cola ambassador, “Shabba” shared insights into what he described as a whirlwind two months.

"In December I received an invitation from FIFA to partake in the FIFA legends game against Mexico and I gladly honoured the invitation and yeah I was well received in Mexico even though I expected a hostile situation,” Tshabalala said jokingly.

“The welcome was great, I had so much fun and also rubbed shoulders with the best in the world. It was an incredible moment, highlight as well and it was a game that was also celebrating the preparation as well and also the build up for the World Cup in Mexico."

Tshabalala, who wore his own FIFA legend attire, said getting recognition from the governing body once again proved the impact of not just his goal, but SA hosting the World Cup.

"That's what we all received upon arrival in Mexico and yeah, it's a highlight if you get recognition from FIFA, I mean that's the highest level, that's the motherbody of world football,” he added.

“For me it was such an honour to get that recognition and also to get an opportunity to play with the best players in the world. To share the dressing room and also get to experience their other side and the kindness as well and their warmth. So, I really had a great time."
