Satisfied Hugo Broos singles out lack of Bafana Bafana firepower

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insisted he was satisfied with what he witnessed from a new-look team against Andorra, although he bemoaned a lack of killer instinct up front.

Bafana were made to fight back from a goal down and could only equalise as 164th-ranked Andorra held them to a draw in Annaba, Algeria on Thursday night.

With Elias Mokwana finding the only goal for his chargers in 25th minute, Broos felt the finishing let them down as they dominated proceedings from then onward.

"I think it showed again, and this is something I could say is a problem for South African football – we don't really have that goal scorer, a guy who scores a goal with one chance," Broos reacted after the match.

"If you see the six or seven chances we had today, we only scored once. So these types of games you have to always win if you are more aggressive and have more quality in front of goal.

"But this is only a small thing that I'm not satisfied about, but for the rest, there were a few guys that satisfied me a lot."

In the lead up to the match, the Belgian outlined what they expected against Andorra, which proved to be the case as a high number of fouls were witnessed.

"I think you saw today what I said before the game, it's a team who plays very defensive, very physical, they always look for the duel and play first the man and then the ball," added Broos.

"That's the kind of style they have and, again, it was very difficult because they lose nearly every game, but it's always only by a one-goal margin, so it could have happened today also because, okay, we gave a goal away very easily.

"But if you saw the chances we had after that, I think six or seven good chances to score, so even with that little present we gave them, we could have won the game.

"So I'm satisfied, really – not with the result, I would have liked to win today, but I'm satisfied with the performance of this totally new team.

"And I'm certainly satisfied with some of the players, who I think are the right guys on which we can count maybe for the next games in June and at the end of the year."

Finally, the lessons taken from the encounter were valuable in the 71-year-old's eyes, as he now has a bigger pool to select from for future camps.

"I think we learned a lot today, it was very difficult to play against them and I think therefore it was a good experience for all the young guys who played for the first time.

"So, I think they know now what the difference is between the PSL and this kind of games, even if you play against a team ranked [164] on FIFA rankings.

"And that was also the goal for us today, was to give those players chances to get that experience, first of all, and again I'm really satisfied," Broos concluded.
