Ouaddou convinced unity can end 14-year league title drought

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes that unity and solidarity can help them sustain their good run and overcome the pressure to hold on to top spot in the Betway Premiership until the end of the season.

Ouaddou was speaking after watching his team reclaim top spot on the log, after brushing aside AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last night, to win 2-0.

A goal from Relebohile Mofokeng and an own goal off goalkeeper Darren Johnson clinched the result for the Sea Robbers.

Ouaddou previews the next four months with excitement...

"This is a top moment for us. We are excited to keep working hard, and it's really exciting to have a fantastic team spirit. The unity and the solidarity will help us keep that position. I can tell you tonight that it will not be easy because there are good teams around us, especially after I played against AmaZulu for the first time - they are one of the best teams in the league."

Mofokeng looks to have rediscovered the form that made him one of the top players in the domestic game and also for Bafana Bafana.

He’s been previously utilised on the wings, but also excels in the no.10 role, and Ouaddou is excited to keep him in this position where he looks to be more effective...

"When you are a coach of a professional team, the first thing that you should do is analyse the profile and the qualities of your players, and then to analyse the game model to see if these qualities match with your game model. I saw quickly that he is somebody whom can play in that position because of his awareness and capacity to scan, as well as his ability to turn quickly when he receives the ball."

Pirates’ good run has also seen the ghost coming out in numbers, and sold-out venues are becoming the norm in their matches.

The former Moroccan international captain is urging the Bucs fans to continue rallying behind the team and drive them towards the league title.

Ouaddou, who is leading a proudly African technical team, says it will be a proud moment for him to lead these sons of the continent to what would be Pirates’ first league title in 14 years.

"I'm not working alone, I'm working with fantastic people around me, and when we win it is the victory of the club, the players, and the technical staff - African technical staff.

"If at the end of the season we win the title with all these African coaches, it will be a very strong message to believe in African competencies."

With this victory, Pirates are now three points clear at the top, ahead of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who have enjoyed absolute dominance, winning the last eight league titles.

With the title race still tight, and 15 matches to go, Ouaddou is under no illusions that it’s going to be an exciting and long marathon to the finishing line...
