Mothobi Mvala talks Mamelodi Sundowns approach as Pyramids loom large

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala says they can’t afford a lapse in concentration and must “kill off the game” early in the CAF Champions League return leg away to Pyramids.

The Egyptian side gained a huge advantage at Loftus Stadium last weekend by grabbing the crucial away goal, which they scored seconds before the final whistle to draw the match 1-1.

Sundowns must now outscore the opposition to get their hands on the coveted continental title on Sunday at the 30 June Stadium.

Mvala believes the only way to do that is to deny Pyramids chances and to grab their chances whenever they come Sundowns way.

"We started the first leg well enough, and we stopped their crosses, it was just in the dying minutes during which we lost concentration.

"I think we should kill this game early, and to kill the game, we need to score a few more goals," stressed the staunch centre half.

Unlike Pyramids in this competition, Sundowns have covered some serious mileage and Mvala says the team’s influential players will have to step up.

"We really need the experienced players to come to the party, especially in the changing room, to push the guys over the line. We've played Pyramids in Cairo before, and I believe that because they don't have many supporters, that might count in our favour," said Mvala.

Sundowns players were visibly distraught after allowing Pyramids back in the game in the first leg, however, Mvala insists they remain positive, having reached the final of the Champions League for the first time since 2016.

Asked about fatigue, Mvala argues that going all the way on the continent, as well as the fact that they will be participating in the FIFA Club World Cup next month, somehow gives the squad an even bigger appetite.
