Man Utd seal Champions League return as Kobbie Mainoo sinks Liverpool with late winner

Manchester United secured Champions League qualification with three games to spare after Kobbie Mainoo's late winner capped a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool in a pulsating Premier League encounter at Old Trafford.

In a clash between third and fourth that carried major European stakes, United flew out of the blocks and established a commanding early lead. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the sixth minute when his effort deflected off Alexis Mac Allister and wrong-footed Freddie Woodman, before Benjamin Sesko doubled the advantage eight minutes later after reacting quickest to a Bruno Fernandes-driven move and Luke Shaw delivery.

Liverpool, however, roared back after the break amid a chaotic spell defined by costly United errors. Dominik Szoboszlai reduced the deficit immediately after half-time, punishing a loose pass from substitute Amad Diallo with a composed finish. The visitors then levelled in the 56th minute when Senne Lammens gifted possession straight to Alexis Mac Allister, allowing Cody Gakpo to slot home and restore parity.

With momentum shifting and both sides trading chances in a frenetic atmosphere, the decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute. Liverpool failed to clear their lines from Luke Shaw's cross, and Mainoo pounced on the edge of the area, guiding a low finish into the bottom corner to send the Stretford End into celebration.

The goal was especially significant for the academy graduate, coming just days after he committed his future to the club with a new long-term contract. It also proved the defining moment of a victory that ensured United's return to Europe's elite competition after a two-year absence.

The win also strengthened Michael Carrick's credentials in charge, with United completing a league double over Liverpool for the first time since 2015-16 and extending their impressive record against England's leading sides this season.

Off the pitch, the occasion was marked by concern for Sir Alex Ferguson, who was taken to hospital before kick-off after feeling unwell. The 84-year-old former manager, who won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies during his time at United, remains a regular presence at Old Trafford.

But on a day of high emotion and high stakes, it was United's fast start, Liverpool's response, and Mainoo's late composure that defined a memorable victory - and confirmed Champions League football for next season.
