Leverkusen's Aleix Garcia shut door on West Ham as Champions League dream takes priority

Aleix Garcia has admitted that West Ham held talks with him during the summer transfer window but insisted that staying with Bayer Leverkusen was the right decision for his career.

The Spanish midfielder, who signed a long-term contract with Leverkusen until 2029, was a key figure in their Bundesliga-winning campaign in the 2023-24 season and is now focused on competing in the UEFA Champions League.

"There was interest and some conversations, but if it didn't happen, it's because it wasn't meant to," Garcia told Sport. "For me, the Champions League is key.

"I've worked very hard for it and playing in it was the most important thing. At that moment, Leverkusen and the Champions League came first."

West Ham were keen to strengthen their midfield during the summer and considered Garcia among their main targets, but the 27-year-old made it clear that his priority was to remain in Germany and test himself at the top level of European football.

"It was an interesting option, but I'm comfortable where I am," Garcia added. "So for now, nothing. I'm very happy here."

Looking ahead, Garcia has said he is focused on retaining his place in Kasper Hjulmand's side and helping Leverkusen challenge for more silverware while continuing to represent Spain at international level.

"My focus today is on Leverkusen and competing at the highest level in the Champions League," he said. "If one day an offer comes that really improves on what I have and allows me to keep growing, it'll be considered calmly.

"In the meantime, I'm working to be a starter, win titles here, and stay in the national team."
