Late Lucas Tlhomelang’s wife pays tribute to ex-Pirates footballer

Lucas Tlhomelang’s wife Boikhutso Moilwa has described the late former player as a stalwart and a rose that grew from concrete.

The former Orlando Pirates and Mpumalanga Black Aces left back passed away on Sunday afternoon at the age of 49, having been in and out of hospital in the past year. Speaking exclusively to

SABC Sport, Moilwa – who shares two sons with him - confirmed that Tlhomelang succumbed to infections from a brain tumour after being ill for a number of years.

“I will always remember him as a man who always stood by his words, he called a spade a spade and his remarkable presence reflects and still reflects life. To me Lucas is just nearer to me, but the thought of not seeing him makes me understand that nothing is permanent in this life”, said Moilwa.

“One unique factor I liked the most about him was his kindness, his willingness to give and share without any expectations”.

“It made my heart feel so good that even under those circumstances - with the pain and needles he endured, and with the support machines - he was still able to tell me that he loves me. I will never forget him in my entire life”, concluded the grieving mother.

Besides Pirates and Aces, the man known as “Lookaround” also turned out for Jomo Cosmos and Bloemfontein Celtic in his career, and is a former South Africa international with three Bafana Bafana caps to his name.

His memorial service was held yesterday, with the funeral service set to be held at the Pudumoe Community Hall in the North West on Saturday January 10.
