The left-back was confirmed a free agent on Friday when Pirates announced that he, along with right-back Thabiso Monyane – who has also been offered to Amakhosi, would not have their contracts renewed.
Mako spent seven years with The Buccaneers, however, following protracted discussions over extending his stay, the two parties seemingly could not find each other and parted company.
According to information gathered by the public broadcaster, the 31-year-old has entered into talks with their Soweto rivals over a potential move to The Glamour Boys ahead of the upcoming season.
Mako, who featured in 26 matches during the campaign that has just ended, is a surprise exit, especially considering 34-year-old Deon Hotto is also in the final days of his contract at the club with no new deal confirmed.
But the ex-Chippa United full-back has immediately moved on and looking to secure his future under coach Nasreddine Nabi, with the Chiefs left-back position having proved an area of concern despite the signing of Bradley Cross last season.
Amakhosi had their sights set on Fawaaz Basadien, but with Stellenbosch FC reluctant to sell at any price, the Naturena outfit had initially switched their attention to Riaan Hanamub of AmaZulu.
But Usuthu quickly killed off any possible move when they offered the Namibian international an improved contract around the same time.
Mako now presents a viable option and will arrive as a free agent, should the finer details be ironed out and all parties involved are satisfied.
