The 23-year-old Brazil international joined the Blues from Brighton in a deal reportedly worth 60 million pounds plus potential add-ons of five million pounds. Pedro has made an immediate impact, scoring twice in his first three Premier League appearances.
"When I was in Brighton, I was missing London a little bit," Pedro told the Evening Standard. "I had a chance to move to another club, but I chose Chelsea because it's in London, it's a big club, and I knew in my head it was the right move.
"I've come to a big club at the right time, because I want to be in the Brazil squad for the World Cup."
Pedro added: "The team is young. Everyone has a long contract so we can play together for a long time. If we all know each other, we're more likely to win titles."
Newcastle had been tracking Pedro for some time, submitting a 50 million pounds bid in June. Eddie Howe had tried to sign him previously during his Watford tenure in 2022. Brighton sources confirmed that the Magpies withdrew after it became clear Pedro was reluctant to relocate north.
At one point, Newcastle had been leading the race for the striker, but Chelsea's swift move and Pedro's preference for London ultimately secured the deal. Pedro leaves Brighton having scored 30 goals and contributed 10 assists in 70 matches, helping the Seagulls achieve 11th and eighth-place finishes in successive seasons.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has welcomed Pedro's arrival, highlighting his versatility and potential impact on the team. "Joao brings creativity, movement, and goals. He fits perfectly with our squad and our ambition," Maresca said.
