Richarlison strikes late as 10-man Tottenham sink Chelsea in Sydney

The Brazilian forward struck in the 90th minute after Chelsea failed to make the most of playing against 10 men for the entire second half.

Tottenham took the lead after 19 minutes through new signing Sandro Tonali, who marked his first start for the club with his first goal. Manor Solomon created the chance with a strong run down the right before picking out the Italian midfielder, whose effort took a deflection on its way into the net.

Chelsea responded almost immediately. Romeo Lavia drove forward from midfield before delivering a cross that found Estevao, who headed home at the far post to level the scores just two minutes later.

The first half also saw tempers flare when Conor Gallagher's strong challenge on Dario Essugo sparked a confrontation between both sets of players. Gallagher received a yellow card, while Essugo was able to continue.

Tottenham's task became much tougher just after half-time. Defender Kevin Danso, who had only recently come off the bench, was shown a straight red card for bringing down Joao Pedro as the last defender.

Chelsea controlled possession for much of the second half and created several good chances. Estevao came closest when his effort struck the crossbar, but Xabi Alonso's side could not find the breakthrough despite their numerical advantage.

They were made to pay in the closing moments when Richarlison finished calmly from close range to seal the win in front of a crowd of 80,363 at Stadium Australia.

It was the first defeat for new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso after his side opened their pre-season with a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers. Chelsea now travel to Hong Kong to face Juventus on Wednesday.

Alonso has already overseen several new arrivals this summer, including Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, although the midfielder has yet to join up with the squad. Right-back Marco Palestra made his first appearance for the club, while Cole Palmer and Estevao returned to the starting line-up after missing Chelsea's previous match.

Tottenham have also strengthened their squad during the transfer window, bringing in Tonali from Newcastle United and Matheus Fernandes from West Ham United. Fernandes missed the match with a calf problem, while James Maddison was also unavailable with a minor injury.

The victory capped another encouraging performance for Spurs, who head home unbeaten from their tour after also defeating Auckland FC and drawing with Sydney FC.
