'Este will have his moment' - Alonso backs Estevao to make his Chelsea impact

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has promised teenage forward Estevao will play an important role this season despite his limited opportunities in the first team.

The 19-year-old was left on the bench as Chelsea were eliminated from the EFL Cup by Liverpool on penalties at Anfield on Wednesday, following a 1-1 draw.

Chelsea supporters repeatedly chanted Estevao's name as he warmed up, but Alonso opted against introducing the Brazilian, even with the match finely balanced.

The decision highlighted the youngster's lack of regular playing time, having managed just 47 minutes in the Premier League this season. His only two starts have come in the League Cup.

Alonso explained that the physical demands of the contest and injury concerns involving Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto influenced his substitutions.

"We started with Pedro (Neto), with Danny (Welbeck) and with Morgan (Rogers) up front. The game had very intense moments. We knew that it was going to be physical," Alonso said.

"After we had to deal with Moi (Caicedo), he had little problems. Malo (Gusto), as well, he had cramps. So we were a little bit forced with substitutions."

Alonso acknowledged that Estevao is frustrated by his lack of involvement but insisted the youngster remains part of his plans.

"I understand his situation, and he could be happier for sure. He wants to play and to be part of the team," he said.

"There will be moments for everything. I'm sure Este will have his moment - that's my responsibility."

The Chelsea boss also stressed that the long season would provide opportunities for everyone in his squad.

"We know that the season is going to be long and there will be moments for everyone. Trust me, Este is going to play his role."

Estevao previously made a major impression against Liverpool when he scored the winning goal in their Premier League meeting last October.

Chelsea, currently fifth in the table, turn their attention to Saturday's Premier League home clash against struggling Manchester United, with Estevao hoping to earn more opportunities.
