'I'm very happy' - Iraola hails Liverpool unity after Chelsea penalty shootout win

Andoni Iraola has praised Liverpool's fighting spirit and growing togetherness after they beat Chelsea on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, setting up a meeting with his former club Bournemouth.

Liverpool won 6-5 in the shootout after Wednesday's tie at Anfield finished 1-1, with Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo both scoring penalties before half-time.

The Reds will host Bournemouth in the last eight, with head coach Iraola pleased that his players' efforts had been rewarded with a place in the next round.

"In cup competitions, what matters is that you are in the next round and in the draw," Iraola said. "The players have made a very big effort today and at least we get the reward of being in the quarter-finals."

Iraola admitted he had hoped to avoid Bournemouth in the draw, given his previous connection with the club and their recent form.

"Honestly, before the draw, I said the only team I didn't want was Bournemouth," he said. "For me, it's special. They know me very well and they are playing very well lately."

Liverpool have already faced Tottenham and Chelsea in the competition, but Iraola is determined to make the most of their home advantage against Bournemouth.

"We haven't been very lucky with the draws, but we have to earn the right to be in the semi-finals," he added. "I hope we can do it here at home again."

The Liverpool coach was also encouraged by the growing bond between his players and the supporters, particularly after the team fell behind during the match.

"I feel it and I'm very happy to feel it because I think it's very important," Iraola said. "The players are feeling the support of the ones in the stands. When we are all together, we create better atmospheres."

He highlighted how the fans continued to encourage the team despite the difficult moments, adding that Liverpool had now enjoyed three consecutive home games ending on a positive note.

Iraola also explained his decision to make seven changes to the starting line-up, stressing that squad rotation was necessary given the demands of a busy schedule.

The Liverpool coach acknowledged that introducing Alexis Mac Allister and Alexander Isak late in the game also gave him experienced options should the tie go to penalties.

Young midfielder Trey Nyoni earned praise for his performance, with Iraola pleased that the youngster had handled the pressure of facing a strong opponent in a knockout competition.

"He has done very well. Really well," Iraola said. "It's good for the young players to live these experiences in cup competitions, where if you lose, you are out."

Liverpool now turn their attention to Sunday's Premier League clash with Arsenal at Anfield, as they look to maintain their positive home form.
