Goss urges perspective on Broos criticism after Mexico setback

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss has questioned the unfair criticism that is being directed at the national team’s head coach, Hugo Broos, after they lost their opening game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against co-hosts Mexico.

Criticism of Broos’ tactics has been raging since the 2-0 loss to Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City last Thursday. Some of the disparaging words used against the Belgian mentor have also been unfortunate.

Goss looks at what he phrases as unfair criticism of Broos.

"It's just unfortunate that we aren't realistic enough as South Africa. I'm not saying we shouldn't go try and win games but I think it's unfair on the coach. If you look at his hips stay with the national team I think that has been phenomenal, and its something we haven't had for a while."

When the team held its first training session after returning from Mexico City, Broos looked animated and demanded more focus from his team. Speaking to the traveling South African media from the team’s base camp in Pachuca yesterday, Goss says after working with Broos for more than four years now, they fully understand his demands.

"We know that he will come at us, but we know that after the session he'll go back to being our father and make jokes with us. We still love him and we're going to play for him."

Some hard questions have also been directed at Bafana Bafana captain and number one goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, and Goss says building from the back has always been part of their game as well...

Bafana Bafana travel to Atlanta tomorrow in the USA, ahead of their second Group A game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday against Czechia.
