United Ladies sealed a 4-3 win in extra-time against Zambia’s Zesco Ndola Girls, after the match finished in a 1-1 draw at the UJ AW Muller Stadium on Sunday.
Niyonzima says he is impressed with the team’s resilience even though the crown almost slipped away from them at the last minute.
"This game was difficult, but the team stuck together and did well to attack at the right time and resist the opposition at the right time."
Niyonzima adds that he is happy that the team’s hard work is starting to pay off, and has also called for his home country to start appreciating the growth of women's football.
"My country doesn't appreciate our efforts, but I would still like to thank the players, members of the coaching staff, the fans, and COSAFA for giving us a platform to showcase our abilities."
The Botswana club will represent the Southern African region in the continental finals later this year.
Niyonzima says he wants the team to get some time to rest so they can refocus and get ready for the CAF Champions League.
