Cedric Kaze era begins with squad shake-up at Sekhukhune

SABC Sport can reveal that Sekhukhune United are set to part ways with midfielder Lebohang Phiri following the departure of veteran striker Bradley Grobler as the club begins a major restructuring exercise ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Phiri joined Babina Noko in January after spending more than a year without a club following his exit from French side Guingamp.

The former Bafana Bafana international arrived with high expectations, with then-coach Eric Tinkler backing his experience to bring stability to the midfield and help the club mount a challenge near the top of the Betway Premiership standings.

However, the move did not unfold as many had anticipated.

Phiri managed just five league appearances and featured twice in the Nedbank Cup before Sekhukhune's elimination from the competition.

The public broadcaster understands that the club has proposed a termination settlement to the player and his representatives.

Sources indicate there is unlikely to be a change of heart, with discussions now centred on agreeing to terms that would allow Phiri to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The changes come amid the arrival of former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze, who is set to officially assume his role from July.

Kaze is expected to work alongside Paulus Masehe, while the club remains in the market for an additional assistant coach, placing the future of Andre Arendse in doubt.

Meanwhile, Grobler's time at the club has also come to an end after Sekhukhune opted not to renew his contract.

The 38-year-old striker joined as a free agent from SuperSport United two years ago and proved a valuable contributor, scoring crucial goals during his stay.

Despite injury setbacks, Grobler enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, registering 11 goals and two assists in 26 appearances.

It is understood the veteran forward is still eager to continue playing and will consider offers from elsewhere in the PSL as he looks to extend his career.
