Cavin Johnson: Kaizer Chiefs are back!

Kaizer Chiefs returned to winning ways on Tuesday evening, prompting acting head coach Cavin Johnson to sound the alarm ahead of this weekend’s Soweto Derby.

Chiefs registered their first victory of 2024 after beating Golden Arrows 1-0 in a DStv Premiership match at FNB Stadium, where teenage striker Wandile Duba’s 11th-minute curler sealed a clean sheet victory.

Amakhosi had gone four matches without a win in all competitions – having failed to score in three of those, and Johnson says they are now back on track.

"What a game of football. I thought we played very well in the first half, and we got a goal from a 19-year-old that has been knocking on the door for a while now," reacted Johnson.

"And, like I said before, we have 30 players in our team, and all 30 players should be capable of starting the game.

"But at the same time we are also happy that we have our eighth clean sheet and we scored a goal – and we are back, not back on track, but we gained three points."

The win puts Chiefs back in contention for second spot as they gear up to meet rivals Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday, as they sit just two points behind second-placed Stellenbosch with 11 matches to go in the campaign.

Johnson further outlined what Duba needs to do to continue his rise in the first team, after spending the past two seasons with the Diski Challenge team.

"To judge him on one game will be premature, but to judge him on training sessions, mentality, and attitude, then he probably has a long way to go with Kaizer Chiefs," the coach added.

"He just has to keep on cutting the cloths and he'll get some [or] he won't get some, and if he stays humble then I think he'll be a good striker."
