Kaizer Chiefs record morale-boosting win over Golden Arrows ahead of Soweto derby

Kaizer Chiefs recorded a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows to boost morale ahead of this weekend's Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates.

The match at the FNB Stadium was played on the back of the news that former Amakhosi and Arrows defender Simphiwe Mkhonza sadly passed away earlier on Tuesday at the age of 45.

Both teams came into the contest looking to turn around a shocking run of form with Chiefs having not registered a goal in open play in their last three encounters while Arrows on a run of three consecutive defeats.

Amakhosi certainly looked the hungrier from the start and came storming out of the blocks looking to appease their demanding supporters.

The Soweto giants and the fans were duly rewarded for the quick start when teenager Wandile Duba found the back of the net after 10 minutes with a beautiful, curling strike from outside the box.

The hosts should have made more of good opportunities for the rest of the first half but they were let down by poor play in the final third from the attacking players.

Arrows looked to have received the hairdryer treatment from their coach Mabhuti Khanyeza at the halftime break as the visitors came out a different beast after the interval.

They thought they were level almost immediately but had a goal ruled out for a tight offside call and then made Bruce Bvuma work in the Chiefs goal.

For all their thrust and desperation though Arrows could not break down Bvuma and a solid Chiefs defence as the home team kept a clean sheet that saw them take maximum points.
