CAF confirm more appointments to enhance the African game

CAF Head of TV and Communications Luxolo September has revealed the recruitment of veteran South African administrator Derek Blanckensee as part of continuing to grow the federation.

This was revealed at the unveiling of the new CAF Champions League trophy in Johannesburg ahead of the first leg of the final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

September previously worked with Blanckensee at the Premier Soccer League before heading off to CAF.

He says the appointment is part of enhancing African football.

"You should hear the robust debates within CAF about inter-club football alone. Derek Blanckensee is going to head our professional club football because we are really serious about inter-club football in Africa. We want all of the CAF competitions to compliment one another, but also to create different revenue streams," said September.

Having played multiple roles in his career over the years, September believes Blanckensee will adjust immediately to the requirements at CAF.

"He's been a general coordinator, a stadium inspector for CAF, and a consultant for CAF, but now we're bringing him on board to prepare the future administrators of club football."

September also put into context why CAF felt the need to create a new trophy ahead of the final in Tshwane and Cairo.

"We are revealing the new trophy today, but today is also day one for the repositioning of African club football, and for it to be amongst the best in the world. We were given a mandate by the CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe four years ago, and that was to make African football globally competitive, but how do we do this?

"We have got to look at the product and fix the product. The launch of the trophy is staying true to the African football tradition, whilst modernising it," said the excited CAF Head of TV and Communications.
