Bafana Bafana need to beat South Korea and at least secure qualification to the knockout phase, and possibly finish second in the group. A draw against Czechia yesterday has given Broos’ team a huge boost going to the final match in the group, but equally the Asian’s 1-0 loss to Mexico makes the battle for second spot even more interesting.
Stats show that Bafana improved greatly in the second half, with most of their attacks coming in the second stanza, but overall, Broos’s boys played more attractive football than Czechia as the 74-year-old coach explains...
"Czechia is a physical team and they don't like to play a passing game, they go route one because they have the players for it. I think if you like football, I think you liked our game more compared to the one played by Czechia."
Meanwhile, Broos was also asked about the Mercedes-Benz stadium, and he feels that it’s not a real football stadium as compared to the likes of Azteca Stadium. He feels that the retractable roof element removes the natural feel of being in a football stadium and has artificial elements in it.
Broos also had an interesting take on the hydration breaks, which have become not just a cooling period for the teams but more of a commercial platform for the broadcasters and FIFA.
"I think it's very useful when it's hot, but in other cases it can affect the rhythm of the game You could be dominating and suddenly everything stops for five minutes. We don't need a hydration break in that stadium, the players don't need a drink after 20 minutes."
