Mongoya is expected to be on the bench this evening alongside Leslie Notsi when Likuena take on Bafana Bafana in a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
However, his decision to accept the invitation has not been well received at Upington. Sources confirmed to the public broadcaster that the coach has been charged with “serious misconduct.”
According to the Lesotho Football Association (LeFA), Mongoya’s appointment was confirmed as far back as July.
The federation indicated he had agreed to assist his native country during the September, October, and November FIFA breaks, as well as whenever Likuena are in camp for the remainder of the year.
It is understood Upington were caught off guard when Mongoya failed to report for duty on 1 September, coinciding with Lesotho’s camp in Bloemfontein ahead of their clash against South Africa.
Following the Bafana fixture, Lesotho will travel to Côte d’Ivoire to face Benin in Abidjan, and SABC Sport understands Mongoya’s disciplinary hearing has been scheduled for 11 September – two days after that match.
Upington City have had a mixed start to the Motsepe Foundation Championship season, beating Kruger United 4-2 in their opener before narrowly losing 1-0 away to Leicesterford City last weekend.
