Petersen was this week confirmed as the new club captain after initially sharing the responsibility alongside Zitha Kwinika and Inacio Miguel.
The former Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper has become one of the senior figures since arriving in Naturena in 2021 and says he’s fully aware of what comes with wearing the armband.
"I think we all understand the importance of a captain in the team, and I think for me the most important part is leading by example and being that figure – the link between the players and coaches," said Petersen.
"And I think for me it's important to obviously stick my neck out for each and every player in the team, and make sure if there's anything that bugs them or anything they need to speak about or struggling with, they can approach me and I'm able to speak and solve it in the best way possible.
"But also I've always liked to believe that I'm a natural leader, and I'm one that leads by action rather than just saying words and speaking stuff.
"So for me it's important to – with the other captains in the captain committee, not just say stuff but do it, and we have to set that example and always try to put our best foot forward."
Chiefs face AS Simba of DR Congo in their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round second leg at Dobsonville Stadium tomorrow, and Petersen believes a clean sheet will be key to their hopes of progressing to the group stages.
"Obviously, we know what's at stake, we know that we can't allow them to score – so I think for us it's to start the game strong, to make sure that we stamp our authority early in the game, and let them know that we're not conceding here [at home]," he added.
"And I think all of the guys are aware of what we have to do, so going into this game, I think the most important thing is not to concede, but also start the game very well and make sure we get some early goals."
