Orlando Pirates coach: I was looking for a strong reaction from my players

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says his love for his players is unquestionable and all he was looking for was a strong reaction from them, following a draw against AmaZulu last week.

Speaking after a well-executed 3-0 win over Chippa United yesterday at the Kings Park Stadium in Durban, Ouaddou says his words were blown out of proportion. Bucs scored three unanswered goals in the second half, with Zambian international Gamphani Lungu, defender Lebone Seema and Zimbabwean international attacker Daniel Musendami on the scoresheet.

Ouaddou says maybe his disadvantage is that he’s too honest.

"It’s funny how some people want to create some politics sometimes between the coach and the players. You know, I know my players very well, I know their psychology, they know their coach,” Ouaddou said.

“Yes, their coach sometimes is hot but the love is here and when a father, when a big brother is speaking because maybe he's waiting for a reaction and I had it that day.

“Now people don't let me do my job, now everybody is commenting, everybody wants to comment on what the coach is saying but you don't know what's happening in the dressing room.

“My only disadvantage as a coach is that maybe I'm too honest and there are a lot of hypocrites in this ecosystem of football and maybe sometimes I'm too honest and people sometimes use that to try and create politics.

‘It's just for people to understand when the coach is asking for something from the players, it's not that the coach wants to make problems. The coach is here to touch one essential point of the psychology sometimes and we had it today."

After witnessing his players missing some crucial chances in the midweek game, Ouaddou says all he was looking for was a strong reaction from his players.

He was also happy with how they utilised their set-pieces, including the goal that came from Seema.

"The set pieces helped us to score and to push this opponent to come out and we found joy in the second and after that my players were free to progress with lots of motivation, with lots of trust as well,” the coach added.

“The second half was much, much better. It's the confirmation of the second half against AmaZulu, I said that I wanted a reaction from my players, I had it today. I just hope that we will be consistent in the next games."
