Brandon Petersen part of Kaizer Chiefs early contract planning

Kaizer Chiefs are understood to be laying the groundwork to secure continuity in key areas of their squad as part of early contract planning ahead of future seasons.

SABC Sport has been led to believe that goalkeeper Brandon Petersen forms part of those internal discussions, with the club keen to maintain stability in the position rather than allow uncertainty to develop.

This comes with Petersen set to enter the final six months of his current deal next month, although the Soweto giants do still hold an option they could trigger at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Chiefs have traditionally placed a premium on strength and depth in the goalkeeping department – often one of the club’s most settled areas – with the likes of Brian Baloyi, Rowen Fernández, Emile Baron and Itumeleng Khune in the past.

Petersen himself only recently recommitted his future to the Glamour Boys when he signed a two-year contract with a possible extension, but time has moved quickly and discussions around longer-term planning are now understood to be back on the agenda.

With sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr intent on avoiding a repeat of key players running down their contracts, there is believed to be a push for early clarity around several positions, with goalkeeping among them.

Chiefs are also expected to soon make a call on out-of-favour Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari, who joined from TS Galaxy last season but has struggled for game time in the current campaign.

Any potential departure would further elevate Petersen’s importance within the squad – a view reinforced by his recent appointment as club captain following a return to form.

Petersen has long been highly regarded at Naturena, even during periods when he was not a regular starter under then coach Nasreddine Nabi.
