Zwane accepts fans' justified booing

Embattled Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane believes fans are justified in booing him. The Amakhosi faithful were infuriated by the 3-2 loss to Golden Arrows in the DStv Premiership at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Sunday.

Zwane had to conduct his post-match interviews on the pitch surrounded by the police, as a small group of supporters booed him before asking him to step down.

"It's within their right. They are disappointed and believe that we should've won this game. I also believe we should've wrapped it up first half. We let ourselves down and I understand their frustration", he conceded.

Chiefs remain fifth on the log with 28 points from 20 matches However, they are only separated by five points with Stellenbosch FC in 13th.

Chiefs could have easily killed the game in the first half after they scored the opening goal through Sifiso Hlanti early in the game.

They had numerous chances but were unlucky in the final third. The technical team made substitution errors in the second half and were punished by the visitors. However, Zwane blames the loss on individuals.

"At times we defended well, and at times we did not defend as a team. A lot of decision-making was very poor from our side, which is something we need to continue working on. And look at, when the energy levels drop, how do we manage the game", he said.

Goalkeeper Brandon Peterson had three clean sheets before this game, and all of that hard work was undone in one game.

However, Zwane was quick to defend Peterson and believes the defenders could have done a better job protecting him in this game.

"Realistically we can't blame him for conceding three goals. I think the defenders should've done better, as well as helped the midfielders. It's our responsibility now to lift him up because he's been doing really well. There's nothing he could've done in all those goals", Mangethe argued.

Teenage sensation Mduduzi Shabalala had a great game and added his second goal of the season, but Zwane replaced him in the 68th minute and the Chiefs attack was never the same after that. Arrows equalized before taking the lead. The former Amakhosi winger explains why that substitution was made.

"There was a time Mdu could've scored three goals, in a space of about seven minutes. One went over the bar, one he was supposed to play Christian (Saile). At that moment you don't want to put him under pressure, you want him while he's still doing well.

That's when I thought of, maybe, let's bring in (Phathutshedzo) Nange to kill off the game, and in the middle push Yusuf (Maar) further forward, with his experience, so you can also press them forward not to allow them to come to us.

Unfortunately, it did not work”.
