Siba Mahashe opened the scoring for the Lions but the Welsh side hit back through Aneurin Owen with Angus O'Brien adding the conversion.
Richard Kriel out the hosts back in front front but the visitors once again responded with Owen going over for his second try.
Smith finished under the poles after a break from deep and converted his own try to restore give the Lions a 25-21 advantage.
The home side then pulled away on the scoreboard with Styen going over for a quick-fire double to almost seal the contest.
When the URC resumes, the Lions take on Glasgow Warriors at Ellis Park, while the Dragons host the Bulls.
