Lions consider deploying Ruan Venter at lock against the Sharks

Lions assistant coach Ricardo Loubscher revealed Ruan Venter's ability to pack down as a lock is factoring into their plans for their clash against the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship on Saturday.

The URC returns to action with another set of South African derbies this weekend, following a two-week break, with the Lions hosting the Sharks at Ellis Park.

The Sharks will be looking for revenge after falling to a one-point defeat in the reverse fixture in January.

Venter was suspended for four games after being sent off for an illegal tackle in that match and is set to make his return to the Lions' lineup this weekend.

However, there is a chance he may not return to his usual position at flank because his replacement Batho Hlekani has been very impressive in his absence.

Loubscher revealed there are two scenarios the Lions are considering to slot Venter back into the team.

"We are privileged to have both of them. We know when they have the ball in hand, they get us over the advantage line," Loubscher said.

"We might include Ruan in the starting lineup, with Batho then coming off the bench.

"We see Ruan as someone who can be utilised at blindside flank and No 4 lock, because he is comfortable in both positions.

"It depends on how we need him on Saturday."

Venter has been used at lock alongside Reinhard Nothnagel, so he is familiar with the position and combination he would find himself in.

Versatility is also becoming more important with Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus tending to favour players who can play in multiple positions.
