Erasmus confident in Bok depth ahead of England Test

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus insists there is no cause for alarm in the second row, although injuries have left the side with fewer specialist lock options than usual ahead of Saturday’s opening Nations Championship Test against England at Ellis Park.

While experienced campaigners Franco Mostert and Lood de Jager are nearing full fitness and could return to action within the coming weeks, the long-term absences of RG Snyman, Ruan Venter and, more recently, Riley Norton have tested South Africa’s depth at lock.

Erasmus says the squad has responded well, with several players capable of filling multiple roles, including Bulls forward Elrigh Louw, who can provide additional cover if required.

"It's really good to have Elrigh back because he only missed out on selection really closely, our squad was just getting too big but it's good to have him, he deserves to be here."

The Springboks will have to navigate the remainder of the 2026 season without influential Snyman, and Erasmus admits his absence will be significant given the impact he brings both physically and tactically.

Erasmus has warned against reading too much into England’s recent results, stressing that the visitors remain one of the toughest teams in world rugby despite ending last season with four consecutive defeats.

"A week is a long time in sport. We lost to New Zealand 57-0 and then the next week was a two point game. Five months after we were smashed, we went to the World Cup and won it. We are under no illusion and we know exactly what we're getting into on Saturday."

As the Boks begin another cycle with several emerging players integrated into the squad and an eye on the 2027 Rugby World Cup, Erasmus says there is little time for nostalgia during a demanding international season.
